Royal Ascot Style Guide

Royal Ascot isn't just a day at the races—it's the pinnacle of British style and elegance. The event has rich traditions and strict dress codes, so knowing what to wear is just as important as picking the right horse.

Whether you're stepping into the exclusive Royal Enclosure, making a statement in the Queen Anne Enclosure, or enjoying the lively atmosphere of the Windsor Enclosure, we have got you covered.

From top hats and tails to stylish three-piece suits, this ascot style guide will ensure you look the part—no matter where you're watching from.

Royal Enclosure

The royal enclosure is the most formal, requiring a black, grey, or navy morning suit with a waistcoat and tie (no cravats or bow ties).

You also need to wear a black or grey top hat, except from if you're indoors or in a private area. Black formal shoes and socks covering the ankle are also required.

Queen Anne Enclosure

In the Queen Anne Enclosure you need to wear a full-length matching suit is with a collared shirt and tie. Smart shoes complete the look.

This enclosure maintains a high dress standard, ensuring a polished and elegant appearance.

Village Enclosure

Smart but slightly more relaxed, the village enclosure requires a jacket, collared shirt, and trousers. We also recommend wearing a tie.

Morning suits aren’t necessary, but trainers and sportswear are not allowed.

Our shout is to go for a stylish, well-fitted suit.

Windsor Enclosure

The Windsor Enclosure has the most relaxed dress code at Royal Ascot, but we still recommend dressing your best.

A blazer, chinos, or tailored trousers with a collared shirt work well. Ties are optional and comfortable, but polished footwear is ideal for a long day at the races.

From the formal Royal Enclosure to the more relaxed Windsor Enclosure, knowing the dress code is key. Whatever the enclosure, make an impression by hiring a suit from Rathbones Tailor.

Do you have to be in the Royal Enclosure to wear a morning suit?

Absolutely not. You can wear a morning suit no matter the enclosure in which you’re spending your day.

As we say at Rathbones Tailor, you can never be overdressed.

Do I have to wear a top hat?

The only place you must wear a top hat is in the royal enclosure. You can remove your top hat when at a bar or restaurant within the royal enclosure.

When should I order my Royal Ascot outfit?

We say the sooner the better as Royal Ascot is our busiest week of the year.

What if I’m attending more than one day of racing? Do I need to pay more?

No! You’ve hired the suit for 8 days, how many times you wear it is up to you. Sleep in it if that’s your thing. Bit hot in the summer though.
